So Not Walking!

Hope that the New Year brings health, renewed faith, and good fortune to all.

Not walking since 10/07/06 because of staph infection in hip. Ended up now with a temporary hip replacement and twelve week recovery time. First of March, permanent hip replacement surgery will be done and all will be well after a 6 week recovery period. I hope to be walking with just one cane by April 1 and doing 1 mile with no assistance by May 1. Until then, I will be doing my walking mostly inside, trying to keep some semblance of order in my home while I recover.

I am so very sorry! Can you tell us a little more or add some links? I've never heard of this, although I know staph is showing up in unusual places. We have a friend with cellulitis, which is staph in the skin creating something that looks like boils and I've heard it is a problem in hospitals.

No hint that there was a problem until the left leg would not bear weight. It took 2 months to find out that staph had taken over. I was at U of IA hospital where three teams of drs - orthopedic surgeon, internal medicine, and infectious diseases, and consultant on rheumatoid athritis -all asked many questions pertaining to family history, lifestyle, etc. My circumstance was unusual, but not unheard of. I was told that they were seeing this happen to the 50 and over crowd more often than in the past. My thought is that overuse of antibiotics has caused these infections to develop without showing symptoms. One of the sites that I used to learn more was www.mayoclinic.com. I am on the mend and that is what counts - I really am glad to be home - enjoying my kit cats, doing my exercises, and working my job from home enough to keep the agencies we report to happy.
